As of February 2023, over 3,580 of these satellites have been mass-produced and are in operation. The Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg, arcing over the Pacific Ocean toward the south. About 8 minutes after liftoff, the rocket’s first stage returned to Vandenberg for a landing on SpaceX’s “Just Read the Instructions” drone ship stationed several hundred miles offshore.
SpaceX also attempted to catch the rocket’s nose cone, or fairing, with a giant net suspended from a ship called “Ms. Tree,” but the fairing missed the net and splashed down into the ocean.
The mission launched a new batch of 51 Starlink satellites, bringing the total number of operational spacecraft to 713.
SpaceX plans to eventually loft more than 12,000 of the satellites, and possibly tens of thousands more, to create a megaconstellation that can provide high-speed internet around the globe.
The SpaceX Crew-4 astronauts have safely returned to Earth after a six-month mission to the International Space Station. The Crew-4 splashed down successfully near Jacksonville, Florida at 4:55 pm EDT (2055 GMT), completing their historic mission.
This is the first time that a commercial spacecraft has carried astronauts to and from the space station, and the first time that a Crew Dragon hasSplashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. The Crew-4 is also the first all-veteran crew to fly in a SpaceX spacecraft.
The astronauts – commander Michael Hopkins, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Shannon Walker and Soichi Noguchi – will now be reunited with their families and friends after a long and demanding mission. They will also be debriefed and medically examined in the coming days.
