As NASA looks to ramp up its human spaceflight efforts in the coming years, the agency’s astronaut corps may need to grow as well.<\/p>\n

That’s according to a new report from NASA’s Office of Inspector General, which found that the astronaut corps is at its smallest since the 1970s.<\/p>\n

Currently, there are 48 active astronauts in the corps. However, NASA will need an estimated 82 astronauts to support its planned missions to the International Space Station, the Moon and Mars over the next decade.<\/p>\n

The report also found that NASA is struggling to attract talented astronauts, due in part to the agency’s focus on science and engineering over flight experience.<\/p>\n

To remedy the situation, the report recommended that NASA increase its outreach to potential astronaut candidates and offer financial incentives for those who join the corps.<\/p>\n

Since then, a new group has been selected roughly every two years. The first group was selected in 1959 and consisted of seven astronauts. Two different astronaut groups were formed: pilots and mission specialists. The group of seven astronauts was chosen for their experience as military test pilots. The second group, selected in 1962, had fourteen astronauts which included the first American woman astronaut, Sally Ride.<\/p>\n

Astronauts are paid by the government according to their qualifications and experience. Those with more experience or who have higher qualifications will be paid more.<\/p>\n

There are many reasons why someone might want to become an astronaut. For some, it is the thrill of exploring the unknown and being on the frontier of human knowledge. For others, it is the challenge of pushing themselves to the limit, both mentally and physically. And for others still, it is the opportunity to inspire future generations.<\/p>\n

Whatever the reason, becoming an astronaut is a highly selective career path. Along with the decade of preparation, a prospective astronaut must meet NASA’s qualifications in order to apply. These qualifications include being a U.S. citizen, being younger than 50 years old, having a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, and having at least three years of related professional experience.<\/p>\n

Those who meet the qualifications and are selected will undergo a two-year training program that includes learning how to fly high-performance aircraft, living in a microgravity environment, and developing teamwork skills.
