They found that the six most distant known objects in the solar system all orbit in the same direction and at similar inclinations. This cluster of orbits is highly unlikely to have arisen by chance. Instead, the most likely explanation is that all six objects were pulled into their present configuration by the gravitational force of a yet-to-be-discovered planet–a “Planet X”–lurking in the outer solar system.
“This excess, or clustering, of orbits implies that something else, with a mass similar to Neptune’s, is shaping these orbits,” Batygin says.
