The space environment is incredibly hostile to human life. Without the proper protection, astronauts are at risk of suffering from a variety of potentially fatal conditions, including ebullism, hypoxia, hypocapnia, and decompression sickness. Even exposure to the vacuum of space can be dangerous, as the lack of oxygen and pressure can cause severe tissue damage. Additionally, the extreme temperatures and radiation levels present in space can also be lethal. It is therefore essential that astronauts take precautions to protect themselves from the dangers of the space environment.

If you want to become an astronaut or otherwise work for NASA, you will need to have a college degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics field. Fulfilling basic requirements does not guarantee admission into the astronaut program—NASA receives thousands of applications each year and only chooses a few hundred candidates to interview. The interview process is very competitive, and the chosen candidates must then complete a two-year training program. Although it is difficult to become an astronaut, it is possible to achieve this dream by studying hard and never giving up.
