SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral yesterday, carrying a communications satellite into orbit for the government of Qatar.
The 224-foot-tall (68-meter) rocket took off at 8:46 p.m. EDT (0046 GMT on Tuesday), lighting up the night sky with a brilliant plume of exhaust. The rocket’s nine Merlin enginespowered the vehicle to space, where the first stage separated about two and a half minutes after liftoff.
The second stage then took over, firing for nearly six minutes to propel the Falcon 9’s payload, the Es’hail-2 satellite, to an altitude of 22,300 miles (35,900 kilometers).
SpaceX officials confirmed that the satellite was successfully deployed about 32 minutes after launch.
The launch was originally scheduled for Wednesday (Nov. 15), but was postponed due to a last-minute software update that SpaceX wanted to perform on the rocket.
