The research, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, said there was a 6% chance that the Tesla would hit Earth in the next million years.
“In the long run, it is inevitable that something will collide with Earth, but the probability of an object the size of a car doing so in the next few centuries is vanishingly small,” said study author and Cornell professor Dave Jewitt.
The researchers used data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite to map the car’s orbit and calculate the probability of a collision.
They concluded that the most likely scenario was that the car would eventually be pulled into the sun by the gravity of the solar system’s largest planet, Jupiter.
“It’s a very low probability, but it’s not zero,” Jewitt said.
The study’s co-author, Jon Massey of the University of time, said the research showed that “our solar system is an diverse and exciting place”.
